International Islamic Finance Conference (IIFC) 2010

LABUAN, March 20, 2010Labuan School of International Business and Finance organized a successful Islamic finance conference, which was held from 18 – 20 March 2010 at Grand Dorsett Labuan Hotel. The conference is first of its kind to be conducted in Labuan, providing a platform  for academicians and industry players to discuss  various issues on international Islamic finance. The conference was officiated by Deputy Finance Minister of Malaysia, YB Senator Dato’ Dr. Awang Adek Hussin (see above picture).

The conference invited outstanding scholars from various fields of Islamic finance such as Prof. Datuk Dr. Syed Othman Al Habshi, Prof. Dr. Abbas Mirakhor and Prof. Dr. Ahamed Kameel Mydin Meera, to name a few. Apart from that, there were more than 30 presenters  from various universities and institutions (see picture below). Topics that were presented included, but not limited to, Islamic wealth planning, Islamic banking, Islamic economics, and regulatory framework. Islamic finance students from LSIBF also attended the concurrent and the practitioner sessions of the conference.

The organizing committee of IIFC 2010 would like to thank all the invited speakers, the invited moderators, the paper presenters, and the support staffs who have worked very hard to ensure the success of this conference. Last but not least, the conference has mapped Labuan as a center for Islamic finance conference and it is hoped that the conference will be organized someday in the future.

Volume 7 of LBIBF

Volume 7 of Labuan Bulletin of International Business & Finance (LBIBF) is available in electronic version. LBIBF is published once a year in December (prior to the year 2005, it was published twice a year in June and December) by LSIBF. The journal provides a platform for empirical researchers interested in issues relevant to international business and finance in all its aspects. More information on LBIBF is available here.

After going through the blind refereeing process, the following five articles have been accepted and published in this 2009 volume:

  1. Regional Income Disparity in Malaysia: Is Sabah Converging, Catching-Up with or Falling Behind Other States In Malaysia? (by Muzafar Shah Habibullah, A.M. Dayang-Affizzah and Kian-Ping Lim).

The following two articles by LSIBF’s staff, Kian-Ping Lim, are now in press:

  1. Kian-Ping Lim and Robert D. Brooks. Why do emerging stock markets experience more persistent price deviations from a random walk over time? A country-level analysis, Macroeconomics Dynamics, Cambridge University Press, in press.
  2. Kian-Ping Lim and Robert D. Brooks. The evolution of stock market efficiency over time: a survey of the empirical literature, Journal of Economic Surveys, Wiley-Blackwell, in press.

The first article is extracted from Chapter 4 of Lim’s Ph.D. thesis at Monash University. The second paper, extracted from his literature review chapter of the same thesis, contains a survey of 321 papers on stock market efficiency. Both journals are indexed by Thomson ISI.

Grant Application Success

The application result for Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), Round 1/2010, has been announced on March 3, 2010. Two applications from LSIBF were approved:

  1. Exploring the Economics of the Management of Cash Waqf: Implication on Poverty Eradication (Head of Project: Dr Rosita Chong)
  2. Identifying Key Variables to Support the Developing an Indicators to Measure the Socio-Economic Contributions of IBFC on the Development of Labuan and Neighbouring States (Head of Project: Raihana Firdaus)

LSIBF would like to congratulate Dr Rosita Chong, Raihana Firdaus and their respective team members for the success in this competitive national grant application.

LSIBF’s Staff The Recipient of 2009 UMS Young Researcher Award

In recognition of outstanding achievement and to stimulate quality research among researchers in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the university’s Center for Research and Innovation launched a new annual award in 2009. There are three categories of this annual award:

(A)  Expert Researcher

(B)  Researcher Award

(C) Young Researcher Award

These awards are open to all Schools, Centers, and Centers of Excellence in the university. Winners in each category received cash prize, plaques, and certificates of participation.  The awards were conferred to researchers based on their potential impact in their respective areas of research. Among the evaluation criteria employed by the selection panel are research excellence shown for the past three years, research projects that were conducted in Malaysia, doctoral research was not considered, and the winner should not be conferred any awards in the same category for a duration of three years.

Labuan School of International Business and Finance (LSIBF) submitted two applications for the Young Researcher Award category. It was another proud moment for LSIBF when Mr. Hanudin Amin was selected among the many hopefuls to receive the award last year. The prize consisted of MYR3000.00, a plaque, and a certificate of participation. Hanudin’s research profile is available here and he also maintains his research blog.

LSIBF, in collaboration with Labuan Offshore Financial Service Authority and International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance, will organize the International Islamic Finance Conference (IIFC) on March 18-20, 2010.
